Nicholas John Yurkiw passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside on February 1, 2023 at the age of 81. Nick was born in Ukraine, grew up in Edmonton, Canada after his family emigrated there during World War II, and lived nearly his entire adult life in Cleveland. He served in the U.S. Army and had fond memories of his time stationed in Bad Hersfeld, Germany. As a member of Iron Workers’ Local No. 17, he worked on the construction of landmark buildings in downtown Cleveland such as the Federal Court House and the Sohio Building. He was an incredibly generous person who always had time for friends and family and would do anything to help them. Nick is survived by his wife of 53 years, Cheri; his sons Jay Yurkiw (Heidi) and Nick Yurkiw; his granddaughters Natalie and Charlotte; sister Daria Celebrezze; brother John Yurkiw; sister-in-law Joni Jenc; nephews James Celebrezze (Jennifer), Nicholas Celebrezze, and Alexander Yurkiw; and niece Leslie Ann Celebrezze (Charles Zonfa). A memorial service will be held at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd., Seville, Ohio 44273, on Monday, March 6, 2023 at 11:15 a.m. (Please arrive 15 minutes earlier). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the Cleveland Maidan Association, www.clevelandmaidan.info/monetary-donations, which sends critical medical and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
